Month One

I can not believe you are already one month old. And even though you’ve only been here for 30 days, I already can’t remember what life was like before you got here!

You are still such a perfect baby and I keep waiting for the day that you cry non-stop because that’s what I’ve always expected a new born to do. Your daddy and I take you every where – you’ve been out to lunches and dinners, on several walks outside, bbq’s, football viewing parties, and a baby shower.

You are not a fan of tummy time or diaper changes and towards the end of this month you also preferred to be held then put down. I think it might have something to do with being spoiled by all your aunties and grandparents.

You weigh 8.2 pounds and although you still look so little, you are definitely starting to fill out more. You are much more awake and aware as well and even though I do not think it’s a reaction to our attempts at making you laugh, you do stare at us and give us sweet little smirks!

Dear Grayson,

Happy birthday sweet baby boy!

You arrived on August 2, 2013 at 12:35 pm and at that very second our lives were forever changed. As soon as your daddy and I heard your little cry we couldn’t hold back our own tears.  The doctors laid you on my chest and for a few minutes it felt like it was just the three of us in that room.

At first I was a little nervous to share you with the world. After all for 10 whole months it was just the two of us. Every kick, roll, or shift in my belly was like a secret conversation that only we knew was taking place. And every movement made me smile knowing that you were growing big and strong.

But as nervous as I was, I couldn’t wait to meet you. I couldn’t wait to see what you would look like, couldn’t wait to hold you, couldn’t wait to discover your personality. If you were anything like your daddy I knew you would have the sweetest soul and if you were anything like me I knew you would have patience – which is exactly what you would need as your dad and I figured out how to raise a newborn for the first time.

You surpassed all of my expectations. You are beautiful, sweet, happy, patient, and calm. You are everything I was dreaming of and more. Even though I want you to stay this small forever, part of me can’t wait to discover the little boy you will become and eventually the man you will grow up to be.

I hope that I am the kind of mom that always lets you know how loved you are. The kind of mom that lets you experience life on your own but also gives you guidance when you need it. The kind of mom that teaches you right from wrong but also lets you get away with things every once and a while.

For now, take your sweet time growing up and know that no matter who you choose to become, your daddy and I will always be your biggest supporters.

Love,

Mom xoxo

Your first home

Lucky you, you live in a very exciting city! And even though mom and dad are eventually looking forward to buying a house in the “burbs” your first home was in a high rise condominium right in the center of down town. We turned our guest room/office into your nursery and even though you can’t talk quite yet, I’m pretty sure you love your new digs! IMG_1395 IMG_1397

In the womb

We were so excited the moment we knew we were pregnant! And even though the excitement never went away, it was put to the side for a few months as I tried to get over the all day nausea! Yea, don’t think for a moment you won’t be reminded of those few months every chance I get! Apparently you did not like ANY food! I couldn’t keep anything down for weeks and even though we were assured that you were growing at a normal rate, we started to wonder why it was taking you so long to make mama’s belly pop for the rest of the world to notice. Eventually the sickness went away and slowly but surely mama started getting a belly:

Merry Christmas!

It was so hard keeping you a secret for a little over two weeks, but with Christmas right around the corner we wanted to wait and surprise every one with a special little gift. Onesies for each of the grandparents: “I love my Abuela & Abuelo” and “I love Oma & Opa.” Tia Diana and Uncle Jay and Auntie Mishi each got one too!

Here are their reactions:

The beginning

Dad was returning from a trip to New Jersey’s Immigration Court.  I picked him up at the airport, but didn’t say anything until we arrived home.  As soon as we arrived at our apartment, I blurted out “I think I’m pregnant!” I had taken a test but the lines were just so confusing to read – we immediately went to the store to buy another less confusing test – a simple “pregnant” or “not pregnant” – no lines or signs.  When this little word appeared we both agreed to keep it our little secret until Christmas…after all you were the best gift we could give our families! Here are a few pictures of you along the way…

Your gender reveal

Finding out whether you were going to be our son or our daughter was so exciting! We wanted to find out with all of our loved ones around us so when we went to the ultrasound we told the tech to write down whether you were a boy or a girl and put it in a sealed envelope. We only let one person know – Yvette, who would be baking a cake for us filled with either blue or pink frosting. That way we could cut the cake with the families and find out together. I had a hunch you were a boy all along, although Daddy was quite certain you were going to be a girl. Once we cut the cake, it was surreal to know that you werent just Baby Arteaga anymore, you were baby boy Arteaga. Things became a little bit more real at that point.
